Promote to Secondary 1
From the second term of Primary 5, you take three 'internal assessments for secondary school places allocation'; results determine your allocation band. Then one round you choose, one round the EDB allocates by the secondary school net of your primary school.

Process

Three internal assessments
Your three results, combined with your primary school's past performance in the Pre-Secondary One Hong Kong Attainment Test, determine your allocation band. There are two bands: one for the whole territory, one within your school net. The same student can have different bands in the two.

Discretionary Places
You can choose any school in Hong Kong, up to 2 schools, no district limit. If admitted, you don't need to join Central Allocation.
- Central Allocation
Part A・Part B
Part A lets you list up to 3 schools anywhere in Hong Kong; Part B must be within the secondary school net of your primary school (18 districts), up to 30 schools. The bulk is in Part B, and it's locked to your net.

Release of results, knocking on the door
After results, knocking on the door is at each school's discretion.
Easiest to get wrong
- Part B follows your "primary school", not your address. That means the moment you choose a primary school, you've also chosen the arena for secondary school allocation six years later — moving house won't change that.
- Once a through-train primary school student participates in Discretionary Places or Central Allocation, they immediately lose the right to direct promotion, and there's no turning back. This is an irreversible decision, so think it through before applying.
- Competition in strong nets is fierce: even in nets with many Band 1 schools, the bar for the top third is just as high. 'Getting into a good net' and 'being allocated a good school' are not the same thing.
