Promote to Secondary 1

From the second term of Primary 5, you take three 'internal assessments for secondary school places allocation'; results determine your allocation band. Then one round you choose, one round the EDB allocates by the secondary school net of your primary school.

Process

  1. P5 second term – P6 second term Three internal assessments

Your three results, combined with your primary school's past performance in the Pre-Secondary One Hong Kong Attainment Test, determine your allocation band. There are two bands: one for the whole territory, one within your school net. The same student can have different bands in the two.

  2. 1 months Discretionary Places

You can choose any school in Hong Kong, up to 2 schools, no district limit. If admitted, you don't need to join Central Allocation.

  3. Central Allocation Part A・Part B

Part A lets you list up to 3 schools anywhere in Hong Kong; Part B must be within the secondary school net of your primary school (18 districts), up to 30 schools. The bulk is in Part B, and it's locked to your net.

  4. 7 months Release of results, knocking on the door

After results, knocking on the door is at each school's discretion.

Official figures

Direct promotion pathway Through-train = all students can voluntarily go straight up (joining allocation forfeits the right; the through-train school must reserve ≥15% places for outsiders); feeder = after deducting repeaters and Discretionary, at most 85% of remaining places, only for top 2/3 in the net and first choice in Category B; nominated = 25% of remaining places, same conditions as feeder.
Banding basis Within-net band is used for Part B and feeder/nominated eligibility; a student's territory-wide and within-net bands can differ

The above ratios and through-train conditions follow official sources; those not yet verified for the current year are marked 'to be verified'.
